On Monday, Dexterity Inc. unveiled Mech, an innovative mobile manipulator aimed at transforming industrial operations. This advanced system, featuring dual arms mounted on a mobile rover, is designed to navigate warehouses and other industrial environments, effectively managing repetitive and demanding tasks.
Based in Redwood City, California, Dexterity developed Mech from its core competencies in Physical AI, enabling it to adapt quickly to various tasks in industrial settings.
“We are incredibly excited to launch Mech, our revolutionary industrial superhumanoid that aims to redefine logistics,” remarked Samir Menon, the CEO and Founder of Dexterity. “Mech stands as a significant milestone in our ongoing quest to equip industries with intelligent and adaptable robots that can tackle intricate labor-intensive challenges safely and efficiently. By fusing human-like adaptability and superhuman strength along with advanced Physical AI, Mech is set to revolutionize logistics operations globally.”
Mech is currently available for enterprise clients focused on truck loading, with plans for expanded software applications set to launch throughout 2025, enhancing its functional repertoire.
Founded in 2017, Dexterity leverages “physical AI” technology to empower its full-stack robotic systems with human-like dexterity, thereby alleviating the burden of repetitive and strenuous tasks for workers in logistics and supply chain operations. The company recently secured $95 million in funding, elevating its valuation to $1.65 billion.
With a history of innovation in dual-armed technologies, Dexterity’s previous model, DexR, specializes in unloading boxes from trailers and containers. Utilizing machine vision, force sensing, and motion planning, DexR efficiently manages a variety of items, ranging from sturdy cardboard to delicate materials.
Mech: A Blend of Strength and Agility
Businesses globally are increasingly pressured to boost productivity while ensuring worker safety. Mech is designed to meet these demands by combining dexterity with intelligence to manage tasks that require intricate planning and substantial lifting. Key use cases for Mech include loading and unloading trucks, palletizing and depalletizing boxes, and fulfilling orders from cost-effective racks.
Capable of lifting up to 130 lbs (approximately 59 kg) with its dual arms, Mech can place items up to 8 feet (2.4 m) high. It operates efficiently in challenging environments, integrating seamlessly with pre-existing infrastructure and legacy automation systems.
Equipped with four independently steerable wheels, Mech can autonomously navigate to the most physically demanding tasks, immediately beginning operations such as lifting, loading, and palletizing at the press of a button.
Dexterity’s Physical AI is integrated within Mech’s advanced onboard AI supercomputer, utilizing numerous AI models to expertly manage complex scenarios—such as stacking irregularly-shaped boxes, coordinating movements in confined spaces, and delicately handling fragile items thanks to an enhanced tactile sensing ability. Additionally, Mech features up to 16 onboard cameras, allowing it to discern the items it is handling and devise optimal packing strategies, all while operating efficiently in temperatures that range from 32 to 122°F.
Significantly, one operator can oversee up to 10 Mechs simultaneously, significantly minimizing the risk of injuries associated with repetitive tasks and heavy lifting.
To boost its functionality, Mech is designed to be easily upgraded with new software applications, enabling it to learn and execute increasingly complex tasks. The initial software available at launch focuses on specialized truck loading, with further task-specific applications expected to roll out later this year.
