Elon Musk, the billionaire entrepreneur known for his leadership at Tesla and SpaceX, recently initiated a controversial poll on his social media platform X. The poll queries users on whether a staff member from his DOGE team, who had previously resigned, should be reinstated after making inflammatory remarks that were linked to tweets promoting racism and eugenics.
In his tweet, Musk posed the question, “Bring back @DOGE staffer who made inappropriate statements via a now deleted pseudonym?” and included options for users to vote “yes” or “no.” This move has sparked widespread debate within the online community.
The staff member in question, Marko Elez, stepped down on Thursday after inquiries from The Wall Street Journal regarding his association with an X account that had posted offensive comments. Notably, a post attributed to this account featured the statement, “Just for the record, I was racist before it was cool,” highlighting the provocative nature of the content.
Elez was part of Musk’s Department of Government Efficiency team, which has been assigned by President Donald Trump to streamline federal expenditures and decrease the size of the U.S. government workforce. His resignation followed a period of scrutiny, particularly after a federal judge granted him and another DOGE staff member access to the payment system of the U.S. Treasury. However, the judge imposed restrictions on their ability to disseminate information obtained from this highly sensitive system.
