Broadway’s ‘PURPOSE’ Set for Opening Night
The highly anticipated play, PURPOSE, crafted by the talented Branden Jacobs-Jenkins and helmed by Phylicia Rashad in her Broadway directorial debut, is officially set to debut tonight, March 17, 2025, at the Helen Hayes Theater. The excitement builds as audiences look forward to the compelling performances that await them.
The cast of PURPOSE includes a stellar lineup, featuring two-time Tony Award nominee LaTanya Richardson Jackson, alongside notable actors such as Harry Lennix, Jon Michael Hill, Glenn Davis, Alana Arenas, and Tony Award winner Kara Young. Many of these talented performers, including Arenas, Davis, Hill, and Lennix, were part of the play’s celebrated world premiere at Steppenwolf in March 2024, contributing to its initial acclaim.
The narrative revolves around the Jasper family, a notable fixture in Black American politics, known for their contributions as civil rights activists, religious leaders, and elected officials. However, beneath their esteemed reputation lie hidden fractures and undisclosed secrets. The story intensifies when the youngest son, Nazareth, returns home unexpectedly with a friend, prompting the family to confront their past, beliefs, and the complexities of their political heritage. PURPOSE promises a rich blend of humor, emotion, and tension, presenting a profound exploration of familial duty and identity through the lens of one of America’s most prominent contemporary playwrights.
