Google DeepMind introduces two Gemini-based models to bring AI to the real world

Google DeepMind has recently launched two innovative artificial intelligence models, named Gemini Robotics and Gemini Robotics-ER. These new tools signify a notable advancement in deploying sophisticated AI capabilities within physical environments. Building on its existing Gemini 2.0 framework, these models enhance DeepMind’s ability to process multimodal reasoning, which previously included text, images, audio, and video, by enabling direct interaction with the surroundings.

Gemini Robotics operates as a cutting-edge vision-language-action (VLA) model that empowers robots to perform physical actions as an additional output. Meanwhile, Gemini Robotics-ER enhances spatial awareness, allowing roboticists to tap into Gemini’s embodied reasoning for bespoke programming solutions. Together, these innovations broaden the spectrum of tasks robots can accomplish in real-world scenarios. Demonstrating a commitment to practical applications, DeepMind is collaborating with Apptronik to incorporate Gemini 2.0 into humanoid robotics.

iRobot considers a sale

In light of substantial financial difficulties and growing concerns about its long-term viability, iRobot has initiated a formal strategic review to explore various options, including a potential sale or opportunities for restructuring debt. This decision comes after the company’s anticipated acquisition by Amazon fell through, primarily due to antitrust issues. Despite efforts to stabilize operations, the financial outlook for iRobot has significantly worsened. The company reported a staggering 23.4% decline in revenue in fiscal 2024, plummeting from $890.6 million to $681.8 million, accompanied by an operational deficit of $103 million. To counter these challenges, iRobot has implemented rigorous cost-cutting measures, including a workforce reduction exceeding 50% and an office space downsizing. However, these actions have struggled to mitigate the effects of dwindling revenue, increased promotional expenditures, order timing complications, and heightened competitive pressures, all of which the company hopes to address with an updated lineup of products.
