What We Lost: A Portrait of Los Angeles Through 77 Memories

Each year, on the anniversary of my father’s passing, I find solace in writing him a letter. The last occasion was particularly poignant, as I was at the park accompanied by a quartet of deer that seemed to share the moment with me.

Juan: Strolling along the familiar trails was an activity we would engage in from time to time while residing in the Palisades. Even after relocating, visits to the Recreational Center and walks through the canyon remained part of our routine.

Antioch Street

Every Sunday, our ritual involved visiting Café Vida, where the experience extended beyond the food. Antioch Street transformed into a lively scene, shut down for the farmers market, where I would run into familiar faces while browsing my friend Jaimie Geller’s jewelry shop or Marc Michel Eyewear Studio—the sole place for my eyewear needs for the last quarter-century. Elysewalker’s boutique, though starting as a small room, has flourished over the years, and I have watched it grow. My usual brunch order of brown rice pancakes at Café Vida became a comforting staple during those Sundays spent with my fiancé, Steve. Throughout the week, we often returned for errands, appointments, or visits to local friends’ businesses, making it a steadfast part of our lives.

I also fondly remember the simple joys, like when my mother would take my son Cooper to the nearby Starbucks for his beloved lemon loaf cake. It’s these endearing moments that truly defined the charm of Antioch Street for me.

Enchanted Way is a street steeped in my childhood memories, nestled within the Pacific Palisades. It was a vibrant neighborhood filled with families, and I enjoyed countless adventures with a group of children, where we created our own games—from imaginary battles in the canyon to spirited flag football on the street, where I proudly stood out as the only girl.

Though I’ve spent the past 22 years living outside of the U.S., Enchanted Way remains a sentimental touchstone for me, offering a sense of belonging. The street may not have seemed extraordinary at first glance, but venturing into the backyards revealed lush sanctuaries overlooking the valley and the ocean. Our home was graced with a towering pine tree and a flourishing garden that brimmed with vibrant flowers, each plant evoking cherished memories. It is the essence of those trees, imbued with profound wisdom and grace, that I will always carry with me.
