A significant change is underway within the Federal Acquisition Service (FAS) as an internal document reveals that twelve high-ranking executives are set to depart from their roles. This news was highlighted in a communication from FAS Commissioner Josh Gruenbaum, who expressed gratitude toward the departing leaders for their contributions to the agency’s mission.
Gruenbaum’s message, obtained by Government Executive, emphasized the appreciation for the service provided by the exiting executives. His note comes at a critical time for FAS, which is responsible for managing the government’s purchasing programs, as its parent agency, the General Services Administration (GSA), gears up for workforce reductions.
The GSA anticipates concluding the process of placing employees who opted for deferred resignations on administrative leave by the end of March. This move is part of a broader strategy to reduce staff numbers, which also includes the consideration of voluntary early retirements.
A spokesperson for GSA commented on the leadership changes, noting that Commissioner Gruenbaum aimed to honor the contributions of those leaving while also welcoming incoming leadership. The spokesperson acknowledged the departing officials’ efforts on behalf of both the GSA and the American public.
In addition to announcing the departures, Gruenbaum detailed the appointment of acting assistant commissioners for each of FAS’s portfolios. These individuals are primarily drawn from the agency’s career staff, ensuring continuity in leadership during this transitional phase.
According to data from the Office of Personnel Management, FAS had 34 individuals in the senior executive service as of September 2024, highlighting the scale of this shift.
In related developments, it has been reported that some associates of Elon Musk are now involved with the GSA, as the centibillionaire supports efforts to streamline the federal workforce under the Trump administration.
