DIGHTON — A serious car accident occurred on Saturday evening in Dighton, leaving a 19-year-old passenger from Taunton with life-threatening injuries, as reported by local police.
The young man was quickly transported by the Dighton Fire Department to a designated landing zone, after which he was airlifted by medical helicopter to Rhode Island Hospital for urgent medical care.
The driver, a woman from Dighton, also received medical attention and was taken to Rhode Island Hospital by the Berkley Fire and Rescue Department. Specific details regarding her injuries were not disclosed by the police.
As of the latest updates, the condition of the 19-year-old passenger remains critical. Dighton Police Chief George Nichols confirmed that he is still hospitalized due to the severity of his injuries.
According to eyewitness accounts, the crash happened on Tremont Street around 6:18 p.m. A Dighton police officer reportedly observed the grey Mercedes sedan making a sharp right turn from Somerset Avenue onto Old Somerset Avenue at a high speed.
Initial investigations suggest that the car accelerated westward on Tremont Street, veering off the road near 465 Tremont St. The vehicle collided first with a utility pole and subsequently with a tree, ultimately rolling over and coming to a stop in an upright position.
Names of the individuals involved in the crash have not been released at this time as authorities continue their investigation.
The Taunton Fire Department played a role in providing support at the crash site.
The Dighton Police Department, alongside the Massachusetts State Police Collision Analysis and Reconstruction Section and the Detectives Unit assigned to the Bristol County District Attorney’s Office, are conducting a thorough investigation into the incident.
