On Thursday, the American Film Institute announced its prestigious selection for the top 10 films and television shows for 2024. This year’s AFI Awards list features strong contenders for the Oscars, such as Neon’s “Anora” and A24’s “The Brutalist,” alongside popular series like HBO’s “The Penguin” and FX’s “Shōgun.” Fans are left to ponder whether their beloved projects have made it onto the coveted list.
However, several notable films like “September 5,” “Gladiator II,” and “The Substance” were not included this year. In terms of television, acclaimed series such as “Slow Horses,” “Only Murders in the Building,” and “Ripley” were also overlooked.
The AFI’s selections have historically been a reliable predictor for the Best Picture category at the Academy Awards. In the prior year, only two films from AFI’s top 10—“May December” and “Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse”—were absent from the actual Oscar nominations. They were ultimately replaced by two international entries: France’s “Anatomy of a Fall” and the UK’s “The Zone of Interest.”
SEE ‘Shōgun’ claims the top spot for nominations at the 2025 Critics Choice TV Awards.

Among them were esteemed academics from institutions like Syracuse University and the University of Southern California, as well as prominent critics from respected outlets. The juries were led by AFI Board member Jeanine Basinger and Vice Chair Richard Frank.
The American Film Institute will celebrate its 2024 honorees at a formal black-tie gala on January 10, 2025, hosted at the Four Seasons Hotel in Beverly Hills.
