Liz Cheney Announces Support for Kamala Harris in 2024 Election
Former Representative Liz Cheney, who once held a prominent position within the Republican Party, has publicly declared her intention to vote for Democratic Vice President Kamala Harris in the upcoming 2024 election. At a speaking engagement at Duke University in North Carolina, Cheney articulated her stance, emphasizing the critical nature of the upcoming election.
According to Cheney, “I don’t believe we have the luxury of writing in candidates’ names, particularly in swing states.” She expressed deep concern over the potential consequences of Donald Trump’s candidacy. “As a conservative, as someone who believes in and cares about the Constitution, I have thought deeply about this, and because of the danger that Donald Trump poses, not only am I not voting for Donald Trump, but I will be voting for Kamala Harris,” she stated.
Trump Campaign Responds
Shortly after Cheney’s announcement, the Trump campaign reacted by resurfacing an interview from four years ago in which Cheney criticized Harris. In that segment, Cheney remarked on Harris’s voting record, arguing that it was “to the left of Bernie Sanders and Elizabeth Warren,” labeling her a “radical liberal.” This response highlights the shift in Cheney’s political positioning since her earlier criticisms of the Democrat.
Cheney’s Republican Roots
Cheney, who is the daughter of former Vice President Dick Cheney, was once seen as a rising star within the Republican ranks and held significant leadership roles. However, her dissenting opinions on Trump, especially her vote to impeach him in early 2021 over his role in the January 6 Capitol insurrection, set her apart from many in her party.
After calling for accountability following the Capitol riots—largely carried out by Trump supporters—Cheney faced intense backlash from Trump loyalists and was ultimately removed from her leadership position within the House GOP. Furthermore, she was unseated in the 2022 GOP congressional primary in Wyoming by a Trump-backed candidate.
Commitment to Democracy
Cheney has consistently vocalized her commitment to safeguarding democratic principles, positioning herself as a defender of constitutional integrity. She served on a special select committee established by House Democrats to investigate the events of January 6, alongside only one other Republican.
Despite outreach from the Biden campaign, which shifted to support Harris after Biden’s decision not to seek re-election, Cheney maintained her distance from other anti-Trump Republicans who actively aligned with the Democratic Party’s initiatives. These include figures like former Representative Adam Kinzinger and former Georgia Lieutenant Governor Geoff Duncan, who participated in the recent Democratic National Convention.
In her ongoing critique of Trump, Cheney has characterized him using strong language, calling him a “liar” and a “con man,” and warned of the potential dangers he poses should he return to office. In fact, she has made a commitment to ensure that Trump does not regain access to the Oval Office, stating, “I will do everything I can to make sure he is never anywhere near the Oval Office again.”
As the election cycle progresses, Cheney’s endorsement of Harris could have implications for the political landscape, particularly among swing voters and moderate conservatives who share her concerns about Trump.
