Christopher Bollen on Gays Reading

Christopher Bollen’s latest novel, Havoc, features prominently in my list of top mysteries, thrillers, and true crime books for 2024. Recently, Bollen appeared on the podcast Gays Reading, where he engaged in a lively discussion with host Jason Blitman about the novel. The conversation took a light-hearted turn with amusing personal anecdotes, including Bollen’s surprising collection of robes. Fans of Simon Doonan will appreciate the entertaining dialogue!

The U.K.’s First Gaelic Prestige Crime Drama Series

For those yearning for compelling television, the new BBC series An t-Eilean (translated as “The Island”) is generating a buzz as a prestigious crime drama set against the picturesque backdrop of Scotland’s Western Isles. With no announced release date in the U.S., avid viewers are hopeful for its eventual availability, as its unique setting and narrative promise to captivate audiences.

Conclave Is Now Streaming

If you missed Conclave during its theatrical run, worry not! The film is now available for streaming on Peacock. Based on Robert Harris‘ acclaimed novel, the film has recently gained recognition with a Golden Globe for Best Screenplay and has received 12 BAFTA nominations, in addition to praise from critics. This marks it as a significant cultural piece worth exploring.

Celebrating Attica Locke

Long-time readers of this newsletter know my admiration for Attica Locke. If you haven’t yet delved into her Highway 59 trilogy, I urge you to pick it up immediately! In a recent episode of the Crime Writers of Color Podcast, she sits down with host Robert Justice to discuss her writing process, details about an adaptation of her work, and her career in Hollywood. Locke has contributed to notable shows such as Empire, When They See Us, From Scratch, and Little Fires Everywhere, with the latter two being outstanding adaptations of celebrated novels.

First Simultaneous Release in Theaters and Prisons

The film Sing Sing is set to make history by being the first film released simultaneously in theaters and prisons. This groundbreaking initiative, which stems from a collaboration between distributor A24 and the nonprofit Edovo, aims to provide nearly one million incarcerated viewers access to the movie, furthering educational opportunities. Scheduled for its re-release on January 17, the film represents progress towards inclusivity in media access, although it is noteworthy that the real-life Sing Sing prison does not yet have access to Edovo tablets.
