54th New Directors/New Films: A Showcase of Emerging Talent
The Museum of Modern Art and Film at Lincoln Center have unveiled the 54th edition of New Directors/New Films (ND/NF), scheduled to run from April 2 to April 13. The event has released a trailer that offers a glimpse into the lineup, promising an exciting selection of cinematic works. Since its inception in 1972, ND/NF has been renowned for highlighting the creativity and boldness of new filmmakers, revealing the dynamic nature of contemporary cinema.
This year’s festival will feature 24 full-length films along with nine short films, including an impressive 20 North American or U.S. premieres. The opening film will be Familiar Touch, marking the New York debut of director Sarah Friedland. This notable work secured three significant awards during the 2024 Venice Film Festival’s Orizzonti Competition and boasts a powerful performance from Kathleen Chalfant. Closing the festival will be the New York premiere of Alex Russell’s feature directorial debut, Lurker. This suspenseful thriller delves into the unsettling elements of pop-star fandom and has already garnered attention at leading film festivals including Sundance and Berlin.
The ND/NF program will explore a wide range of themes, such as community, family histories, artists’ lives, and pressing global political issues. It will also shed light on the intricate experiences of youth and the journey of coming of age. Some films break traditional boundaries, merging elements of fiction with documentary storytelling. This year’s selection showcases a rich geographical diversity, featuring works from emerging filmmakers across 22 countries. Many films have received accolades at prestigious international film festivals such as Cannes, Venice, Locarno, CPH:DOX, Sundance, Rotterdam, and Berlin, underscoring the caliber of talent on display.
