Missing Melbourne Hiker Rescued After Two Weeks in Australian Wilderness
A 23-year-old medical student, Hadi Nazari, has been found after spending two weeks lost in the remote Kosciuszko National Park in New South Wales, Australia. He went missing on December 26, 2024, while hiking with friends and separated from them to take photographs.
During his time alone in the wilderness, Nazari managed to survive on just two muesli bars, foraged berries, and creek water, according to local police reports. His rescuers stated that he approached a group of hikers on the afternoon of January 8, 2025, expressing that he was lost and in need of water.
Rescue Insights
Police Inspector Josh Broadfoot noted, “This is the fourteenth day we’ve been looking for him, and for him to come out and be in such good spirits… it’s incredible.” Nazari was found in surprisingly good condition despite the lengthy ordeal, which included traversing more than six miles over difficult terrain since he was last seen.
Over 300 individuals participated in the search efforts for Nazari, which spanned the national park surrounding Australia’s highest peak, Mount Kosciuszko, at 7,310 feet. The ongoing efforts had previously uncovered his campfire, camera, and hiking poles, indicating he was actively moving through the area.
Support and Recovery
Upon his rescue, Nazari reunited with his hiking companions before being transported for a medical evaluation, where it was determined he required only treatment for dehydration. Ambulance Inspector Adam Mower expressed astonishment at Nazari’s condition, stating, “He’s in remarkable condition for a person who’s been missing for so long.”
Fortunately, the weather conditions during the Southern Hemisphere summer were mild, which may have contributed to his survival.
Hadi Nazari’s experience underscores the importance of preparation and awareness when embarking on outdoor adventures. Authorities have commended both the search teams and Nazari’s resilience in the face of challenging circumstances.
