Mike Krzyzewski Continues the Fight Against Cancer in Honor of Jim Valvano
Nearly sixty years ago, basketball icons Mike Krzyzewski and Jim Valvano fostered a rivalry on the court. Today, Coach K is dedicating his efforts to combat the disease that took Valvano’s life too soon.
Jim Valvano, known for his inspirational personality and unforgettable speech delivered at the ESPY Awards shortly before his death from cancer in 1993, was a significant figure in raising awareness and funding for cancer research. His words became the catalyst for what has evolved into one of the most recognized cancer research funds globally.
As a board member of The V Foundation, Mike Krzyzewski has been an integral part of this movement for over three decades, a testament to the enduring impact of Valvano’s legacy.
Krzyzewski recently hosted a Jimmy V event in Chicago, his hometown, where the gathering raised over $2 million for cancer research. This event was particularly poignant for him, particularly as he has lost both his mother and brother to the disease.
Reflecting on their competitive history, Krzyzewski stated, “Jimmy and I were rivals when he played at Rutgers and I coached at West Point. However, once he transitioned into broadcasting, we established a close friendship, which grew even stronger when he faced his cancer diagnosis.”
Over the years, The V Foundation has made remarkable strides, raising more than $350 million for cancer research, ultimately contributing billions to vital studies aimed at finding cures. “What’s been accomplished is truly magical,” Krzyzewski remarked.
The recent Chicago event was characterized by camaraderie and positivity among attendees, creating a celebratory atmosphere while honoring a shared mission. “It was a wonderful two days filled with good food and wine, fostering a mood of happiness among everyone present,” Krzyzewski said.
Valvano’s resonant mantra, “Don’t give up, don’t ever give up,” remains a powerful rallying cry in the ongoing fight against cancer. These words serve as a reminder of the battle still ahead despite the progress made over the decades.
Coach K emphasized the urgency of this mission, stating, “The reality remains that cancer persists, affecting over 2 million people across our nation. While we have made strides and are on the path to finding cures, we have not yet secured a complete victory. Our efforts are crucial, and when something proves effective in a game, we must persist.”
Through his dedication to The V Foundation and the shared vision with his late friend, Krzyzewski continues to contribute meaningfully to the fight against cancer, embodying the spirit of perseverance that Valvano championed.
