Pants and I have had a complicated relationship over the years. When I was just five, my preference for skirts and dresses led me to rebel against my mother’s attempts to dress me in a pair of cute pants for school. Rather than comply, I confidently walked into class in my underwear, choosing to express my individuality. However, one day, I discovered a pair of pants that intrigued me, leading me to break the “skirts only” rule at school. Unfortunately, this rebellious act resulted in a week-long suspension.
My defiance raised awareness about the school’s dress code, prompting a significant change that allowed all students to wear pants. As I matured, my fascination with the fit of pants deepened. I realized that my shapely figure often went unappreciated in summer dresses or A-line skirts. It was bewildering to witness so many women attempting to downplay their curves instead of embracing them. All I sought was a way to accentuate my trim waist and voluptuous backside.
For years, I hesitated to wear trousers since I struggled to find a pair that suited my body type—often dealing with gapping at the waist or constriction at the hips. Everything changed when I took note of Nicolas Ghesquière’s F/W 2005 collection for Balenciaga, which showcased military-style trousers that fit beautifully at the hips and cascaded stylishly to the ankles, radiating that effortlessly chic Parisian vibe. This collection encouraged me to explore new styles and, in doing so, I learned several valuable lessons about choosing the right pants. Continue reading for my insights.
Tip #1: Not All Pants Are Created Equal
Embrace the reality that the fit of pants can vary significantly. Designs that may appear perfect on a model might not translate the same way on your body. For instance, despite my admiration for low-rise boyfriend jeans or ankle-length cigarette pants, I had to accept that these styles simply did not flatter my figure. Instead, I’ve found that high-waisted trousers with a relaxed or wide leg complement my shape much better. When it comes to staying on-trend, prioritizing what works best for you is essential.

Tip #2: Fabric Matters
For those with curvy shapes or thicker thighs, selecting the right fabric is crucial. If you are among the fortunate, it’s essential to choose materials that feel comfortable and look flattering. Fabrics such as silk or lightweight linen should not cling too tightly; look for options that are lined. In contrast, stiffer fabrics work better when unlined, while excessive stretch is best avoided, as it tends to diminish the quality of the pants’ appearance.

Tip #3: Go Big or Go Home
Dare to choose a larger size if needed. Throughout my adult life, I have rarely bought my actual size in pants. Often, I go up one or two sizes for comfort, allowing my thighs the necessary space they deserve. It can be amusing to hear salespeople insist that my selection is too large—it reaffirms my belief in prioritizing comfort over conforming to size norms.

Tip #4: Your Neighborhood Tailor Is Your New Best Friend
I’ve had every single pair of pants in my wardrobe adjusted at my local tailor. Instead of spending a fortune at high-end tailors, find a skilled tailor who understands your shape. Early on, my tailor asked me why I didn’t simply buy clothes that fit better. In hindsight, I understand his perspective. Larger sizes can be tailored precisely to your shape for an impeccable fit. I typically have the waist adjusted and sometimes the length as well to ensure my pants graze the floor—a personal preference when wearing heels.
