A five-year-old girl is currently on the mend after suffering an apparent overdose from fentanyl last week.
According to the Mission RCMP, the incident occurred while the girl was taking a bath. She reportedly came into contact with a jar containing fentanyl, which led to a range of distressing symptoms.
Emergency responders were dispatched to the residence on Nottman Street at about 9 p.m. on March 20, where they found the child unconscious. Family members had called 911 following a change in her breathing patterns and vomiting, which subsequently worsened her condition.
Paramedics administered several doses of Naloxone, a medication used to reverse opioid overdoses, and this treatment proved effective in stabilizing her health. She spent the night in the hospital and is now expected to make a full recovery.
The Mission RCMP has issued a reminder to the public about the importance of storing fentanyl securely, particularly in homes where children reside. In light of this incident, authorities emphasize the necessity for vigilance regarding the handling of opioids.
“Anyone who suspects they or someone nearby has been exposed to fentanyl—even through incidental skin contact—should seek medical assistance immediately, even if no symptoms are evident,” police urged.
The investigation into the matter is ongoing, as authorities seek to understand the circumstances that led to this dangerous situation.
