Five-Year-Old Boy in Michigan Disarmed by Police, Family Placed in Protective Custody

In a concerning incident in Michigan, a five-year-old boy was taken into custody by Child Protective Services after he greeted police officers at his home while holding a loaded handgun.

The incident unfolded on Saturday in Battle Creek, approximately 121 miles east of Detroit, when officers arrived to serve a subpoena. Upon answering the door, the child initially brandished a large kitchen knife, prompting officers to instruct him to fetch an adult.

After a brief moment, the boy returned, clutching a loaded firearm. Officers quickly intervened and disarmed him without incident, as stated in a release from the Battle Creek Police Department.

Subsequent patrols uncovered two adult males and one adult female inside the residence, who were then detained for questioning regarding the situation. Additionally, five other children, aged between six months and eight years, were placed into the care of Child Protective Services due to the handgun incident and the living conditions within the home. One of the children was reportedly taken to a Kalamazoo hospital for health-related issues.

Authorities have since condemned the family’s home due to code violations. The Calhoun County Prosecutor’s Office is currently pursuing both weapon and neglect charges against the involved adults.

Adding to the gravity of the situation, local news outlet News 8 noted that a man had been arrested at the same residence earlier in the month for domestic violence allegations.

A representative for the family revealed that the woman arrested had been cohabiting with the father of one of her children and another man at the location. The woman’s father recounted that she had been subjected to physical abuse and had reached out to police for help.

“She was a single mother with five kids trying to do the best that she can after what happened with her baby’s daddy throwing all of the kids’ stuff out and everything and having to scrape through the snow to find them,” the father expressed in an interview. His comments hint at broader challenges faced by the family, although specific details regarding the previous incident remain unclear.

In a heartfelt statement, he added, “I love my daughter, I love my grandkids, I want to see everyone back together as a family, that’s all.”
