Residents of Altadena have recently encountered a unique situation concerning a remarkably large bear, weighing in at an impressive 525 pounds. This bear, known to roam the neighborhood, has thwarted attempts by Animal Control to remove him from a homeowner’s property.

The incident began when a local resident returned to his home after evacuating due to the Eaton Fire, which had prompted safety measures in the Pasadena area. Upon requesting the utility company to restore service, he was informed that this couldn’t proceed because of an unexpected housemate residing beneath his home—a substantial bear.

The circumstances surrounding the bear’s presence remain unclear. Many animals have sought refuge in various parts of Los Angeles as they fled the wildfires, leading to speculation that the bear may have been caught in a similar situation. However, the exact reason for its sheltering under the house is still a mystery.

When wildlife experts from the California Department of Fish and Wildlife arrived on the scene, they quickly assessed the situation. Recognizing the potential danger of tranquilizing such a large animal in a confined space, they opted for a different strategy. They set up a trap filled with tempting treats to coax the bear out.

Much to their relief, the bear emerged almost immediately, allowing the team to safely capture him. The wildlife experts then transported the bear to Angeles National Forest, where he was fitted with a tracking collar before being released back into the wild.

Local residents have fondly nicknamed the bear “Barry,” noting that he has become a familiar presence in the neighborhood over time.

It’s advisable for those considering a close encounter with Barry, whether out of curiosity or mischief, to tread carefully. His impressive size and strength may make it challenging for wildlife officials to intervene should anyone get too close.
