’60 Minutes’ Discusses Bill Owens’ Departure, Critiques Paramount’s New Content Oversight Strategy

During a recent CBS broadcast, “60 Minutes” addressed the unexpected departure of its longtime executive producer, Bill Owens. Correspondent Scott Pelley remarked that parent company Paramount has started to take a more active role in shaping content direction.

Pelley noted, “While none of our stories have been censored, Bill felt he could no longer uphold the independence that is essential for authentic journalism.” He added, “It’s a difficult situation for everyone involved, but Bill’s resignation reaffirms his leadership qualities that were invaluable for ’60 Minutes.’”

This announcement was shared in the show’s “Last Minute” segment, coinciding with Paramount Global’s ongoing merger negotiations with Skydance Media. Last week, Owens surprised the industry by announcing his exit amidst a lawsuit from former President Donald Trump, who claims that “60 Minutes” edited an interview with former Vice President Kamala Harris inappropriately.

In his resignation statement, Owens reflected, “In recent months, it has become apparent that I would not have the autonomy to lead the program the way I have historically managed it, making decisions in the best interest of ’60 Minutes’ and our audience.”

Pelley wrapped up the segment by emphasizing the emotional toll of the situation, stating, “This was a challenging decision for him and for all of us, but it underscores his commitment to our team and our viewers.”
