As the 2024 elections approach this November, citizens across all states and the District of Columbia still have an opportunity to register to vote. However, those who have yet to complete their registration should take prompt action, as deadlines may arrive as early as the first week of October in certain regions.
In many states, there are now multiple avenues available for individuals to register or update their voter information, enhancing accessibility compared to previous election years.
“The positive aspect is that registering has become simpler than ever across the United States,” noted CBS News election law expert David Becker in a segment on “CBS Mornings” last month.
Voters can verify their registration status by visiting vote.gov.
Voter registration options by state
Beyond the traditional method of in-person registration, numerous states now facilitate online registration, same-day voter registration, and automatic voter registration. Same-day voter registration allows individuals to register and cast their votes on the same day during early voting and, in many cases, on Election Day.
Approximately half of the states implement automatic voter registration, which automatically enrolls individuals when they engage with certain government agencies, such as the Department of Motor Vehicles, for services like obtaining a driver’s license or ID. Those who prefer not to be automatically registered can opt out of this service.

Registration deadlines for different methods
For advance voter registration—which differs from same-day registration—states are approaching deadlines, with some requiring registration as early as October and others allowing it up until Election Day. A map is provided to clarify the deadlines for registering in person, by mail, or online in each state.
