Scout Motors Revives an Iconic Brand with New EV Models

Over four decades after its last appearance, International Harvester remains a storied name in North America, largely due to the legacy of the Scout, one of the first SUVs to ever hit the market. In a significant turn of events, Scout Motors has re-emerged under the Volkswagen umbrella, unveiling its initial offerings: the Terra pickup and Traveler SUV. Scheduled for production in 2027, both models will commence at a price point below $60,000 before incentives.

Scout Motors emphasizes its intention to respect the essence of the original Scout that was produced from 1961 to 1980. Although the Traveler and Terra showcase contemporary styling, they incorporate design elements that pay homage to their predecessors. This includes rounded shapes and a distinct “black mask” on their front and rear ends, evoking the classic aesthetic. Additionally, these new vehicles feature separate bumpers and upward-arching side windows, reminiscent of the original design.

While the new models retain elements of their forerunners, they simultaneously embrace cutting-edge design innovations. Noteworthy features include a sleek LED strip surrounding the grille and rectangular headlights complemented by slender daytime running lights. According to Scout Motors, the vehicles presented are about 85% aligned with the eventual production version.

The earlier iterations of the Scout and the International 150 pickup were known for their practical and rugged nature, often humorously dubbed “Inter-smashable.” The new models are designed to uphold this reputation, boasting a body-on-frame architecture with a solid rear axle, as well as front and rear locking hubs suited for off-road adventures. The Payload capacity peaks at 2,000 pounds, while towing capabilities reach up to 7,000 pounds for the Traveler and an impressive 10,000 pounds for the Terra pickup. Both models are equipped with all-wheel drive powered by electric motors on both axles.

In addition to their utility, the new models are capable of remarkable performance metrics. They promise acceleration from 0 to 60 MPH in just 3.5 seconds, thanks to an estimated torque output of over 1,000 pound-feet. However, the company has yet to disclose information on the maximum speed of these vehicles.

The base model will feature a range of up to 350 miles per charge, while an extended range version operates like a hybrid, delivering up to 500 miles through the use of a gasoline-powered range extender. Details regarding charging times are currently unavailable, but the vehicles will support an 800-volt architecture accommodating charging speeds of up to 350 kW. Moreover, they will be equipped with bidirectional charging capabilities, allowing energy to be transferred from the vehicle to home setups, alongside features for over-the-air updates and remote diagnostics.

When it comes to the interior, the new models contrast sharply with the minimistic cabins of their predecessors. The interiors now boast luxurious, high-tech elements such as a fully digital instrument cluster and expansive displays, accompanied by an advanced infotainment system that’s responsive to user needs. Traditional controls like toggles and dials for climate settings remain present, preserving a user-friendly interface. Materials include a sophisticated mix of brown leather, fabric, and wood-like finishes.

Both models also incorporate practical design features such as a front trunk (frunk) equipped with 120-volt and USB-C outlets, providing ample storage for items like golf clubs or gym bags. The Terra features a 5.5-foot bed that includes outlets for tools and equipment.

The Traveler SUV will offer unique options including a split tailgate and two distinct roof styles. The first option is the Cabana top, featuring panels that can retract for an open-air experience, while the second is a glass roof equipped with a powered shade. Both models will also have a front bench seat available, allowing for increased passenger capacity.

In a move reminiscent of Tesla’s direct-to-consumer sales model, Scout will provide its vehicles without intermediary dealerships. The purchasing process is designed to take mere minutes, with a commitment to full price transparency, encompassing everything from sales to delivery and service. Prospective buyers can explore the vehicles firsthand at specialized “Scout Workshop” locations dedicated to retail and service.

Designed and engineered in Michigan, the new Scout models will be manufactured at a state-of-the-art factory in Columbia, South Carolina, with an anticipated workforce of approximately 4,000. Production is set to commence in 2027, with the first vehicles expected to roll out for the 2028 model year. As Scout Motors gears up for this exciting new chapter, reservations for the models are now being accepted.
