Former NFL player and media commentator Robert Griffin III took to social media to express his views regarding the recent presidential election and an assassination attempt on Donald Trump. In a post on X (formerly Twitter) on Wednesday, Griffin shared an iconic image of Trump, portraying him with a bloodied face and a raised fist, after the July 13 incident in Butler, Pennsylvania.
Captioning the image with a rather provocative statement, Griffin indicated it represented “the moment Donald Trump won the election.” This post draws significant attention to Griffin’s own political stance, as he typically refrains from vocal political discourse compared to some of his peers in sports and media.
Earlier in July, after Trump’s assassination attempt, Griffin did comment on the situation. He posted a video defending Trump and challenging conspiracy theories that the incident was a set-up. In the video, he emphasized the importance of prioritizing empathy over political gamesmanship during such crises.
“Hey man, I don’t really care how much you love or hate President Donald Trump. Now is not the time to play politics,” he stated. Griffin urged his followers to pray for Trump and the families affected by the shooting, stressing that focusing on conspiracy theories detracts from the real loss experienced by victims’ families.
Additionally, Griffin condemned the law enforcement agencies responsible for ensuring Trump’s safety at the time of the attack. “There is no way in hell this should have happened… Whoever was in charge of the police that day should be gone,” he asserted, advocating for accountability irrespective of political opinions. His statement emphasized that every life has intrinsic value, highlighting a call for reform and responsibility in security protocols.
During the summer, Griffin had also made his voice heard during the first presidential debate between Trump and President Biden, commenting on the candidates’ performances. He remarked on X that the debate displayed the pressing need for younger candidates, critiquing what he perceived as a lack of substance when the two leaders diverged into discussions about their golf handicaps.
The political landscape within the NFL community is notably varied, with players like Brett Favre, Antonio Brown, and Le’Veon Bell aligning themselves with Trump’s agenda, while others, including Ryan Clark and Colin Kaepernick, have taken stances critical of the former president. Notably, current San Francisco 49ers player Nick Bosa raised eyebrows by sporting a “Make America Great Again” hat during a postgame interview, a move that could attract financial penalties from the league.
