Robert Geller’s Innovative Approach to Pre-Fall Menswear
During the recent menswear presentation at Rag & Bone, designer Robert Geller expressed the challenges associated with creating pre-fall collections. He noted, “I think most designers would agree that pre-fall is one of the hardest collections to design.” Unlike other seasons, pre-fall lacks the robust offerings of outerwear and layering options, compelling designers to think creatively.
Geller tackled this challenge by focusing on layering-friendly garments, utilizing lightweight fabrics and advanced technologies such as Miramar and Airflex. His designs incorporated a relaxed aesthetic that emphasizes wearability. This season’s collection features a variety of options, including tailored linen ensembles, sporty terry sweatsuits, and sleek nylon shirts and chinos, all designed to be both stylish and functional.
A significant aspect of Geller’s work is his attention to practicality in menswear. He highlighted the importance of incorporating functional elements into the designs, such as numerous pockets, stating, “Men need pockets. You need places to put your phones, keys, and things because we often don’t wear bags.” This practical focus reflects an understanding of modern men’s lifestyle needs.
For Geller, the intersection of aesthetics and functionality is vital. His philosophy this season centers around ease of wear. He described the approach at Rag & Bone as rooted in fabric innovation, stating, “What we’re doing at Rag & Bone is that we have a lot of fabric innovation and fabrications that don’t wrinkle. Most of it is very unfussy, but you still look quite dressed up.” This balance ensures that pieces not only look sophisticated but also fit seamlessly into daily life, making them ideal for the contemporary man.
