Google has announced the integration of Imagen 3 into Google Docs for users subscribed to paid Gemini in Workspace. This new feature enables users to create custom inline images seamlessly within their documents, a significant enhancement compared to previous capabilities that only allowed for full-bleed cover images.
The introduction of Imagen 3 marks a notable advancement in Google’s image generation technology. According to a blog post released by the company, these “photorealistic” images are anticipated to serve as alternatives to stock images in various contexts. However, to access the image creation feature, users must be paid Workspace subscribers or Google One AI Premium members.
Prior to this rollout, Google was already exploring image generation within its Workspace suite, having initially introduced full-bleed cover images for Google Docs and image generation for Google Slides. With the latest update, users can generate inline images from simple prompts in addition to full-page images.
To utilize Imagen 3 in Google Docs, users should go to the Insert menu and select Image or Cover image. They can then choose Help me create an image to generate an image based on a custom text prompt. Users also have the option to select from various styles to personalize the generated images further. After the image creation process, three aspect ratios can be chosen to ensure the image fits the layout of the document best.
The feature currently supports custom cover images exclusively in “pageless mode,” which allows the generated image to span the entire document. To enable this, users can navigate to File > Page setup > Pageless or Format > Switch to Pageless format.
It is important to note that the text-to-image generation capability in Google Docs is not available to free users. Access is granted to organizational users on Gemini Business, Gemini Enterprise, Gemini Education, and Gemini Education Premium plans. Additionally, individual users who subscribe to Google One AI Premium can also utilize this feature. The rollout is currently in progress but may take time to reach all users, particularly in environments that implement a phased release schedule.
