Timothée Chalamet and Elle Fanning Embrace Viral Meme Featuring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo

Timothée Chalamet and Elle Fanning have joined in on the fun surrounding the viral meme featuring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo from Wicked. The two stars of A Complete Unknown showcased their playful acknowledgment of the situation during a recent interaction with journalist Tracy Gilchrist.

In a video shared by The Advocate, Gilchrist, who became an internet sensation in November for an amusing exchange with the Wicked actresses, recreated the now-iconic moment during her interview with Chalamet and Fanning.

The clip opens with Gilchrist breaking the ice by stating, “First, I just want to let you know that I am holding space for you,” referencing her viral catchphrase, which elicited laughter from both actors.

Chalamet humorously extended his finger for Fanning to hold, mimicking the interaction between Grande and Erivo from the previous viral moment. “It’s an honor talking to you,” Chalamet said earnestly, expressing his awe at meeting the journalist. “I feel like, sort of starstruck. I was like, ‘Tracy! Holy s–t. Okay, this better be good.’”

Fanning added, “There’s nothing that we can do that can trump what happened, you know what I mean?” The three shared a laugh, reinforcing the infectious nature of the original meme.

Gilchrist’s interview occurs shortly after Grande and Erivo’s exchange sparked discussions online about the meaning of “holding space.” During a conversation with the duo for Out magazine in mid-November, Gilchrist noted how fans were linking the Wicked lyrics of “Defying Gravity” to the concept.

Erivo appeared visibly moved, while Grande expressed a slight confusion as she held onto her co-star’s finger. Following the interview, social media buzzed with interpretations of “holding space,” with audiences dissecting the nuances of the phrase.

In a subsequent interview, Grande humorously admitted her own bewilderment during the original exchange. “I didn’t know what any part of it meant,” she said, recalling her thoughts at the time. Gilchrist later clarified the phrase’s meaning and embraced the unexpected fame through various platforms, further contributing to the conversation around the meme.
