Simon & Schuster Launches Simon Maverick: A New Audio Imprint for Independent Authors
Simon & Schuster (S&S) is making a significant move in the publishing world with the launch of Simon Maverick, an audio-first imprint dedicated to showcasing works from self-published authors. Jason Pinter, previously the publisher of Polis Books, has joined the S&S team as the VP and editorial director of this new imprint, starting November 4.
S&S describes Simon Maverick as a groundbreaking initiative in the realm of audio publishing, claiming it to be the first audio imprint among the “Big Five” publishers that focuses on highlighting the contributions of diverse and emerging independent authors. With an ambitious goal to release over 50 titles in 2025, the imprint has already secured around 35 titles and intends to increase its output to between 50 and 100 audiobooks each year, prioritizing original audio productions alongside selected print projects.
Pinter indicated the imprint’s strategy involves searching for previously published works that have gained a readership but are yet to be adapted into audio formats. Additionally, he aims to build relationships with both published and unpublished authors. He noted that the initial launch list comprises a balanced mix of audio-first titles and those that have appeared in print, although he anticipates a future shift towards more exclusively audio content.
Among the initial releases slated for Simon Maverick are Lauren Palphreyman’s romantic fantasy The Wolf King, Jessica Cage’s monster fantasy I Accidentally Summoned a Demon Boyfriend, Noelle West Ihli’s thriller Such Quiet Girls, and Brady Hunsaker’s Scandinavian fantasy The Depths of Vanalf. All four titles are also available as Kindle ebooks.
Pinter expressed a clear vision for the imprint, stating, “We are looking to build a substantial audio division” that is poised for rapid expansion. He believes there is a significant opportunity to collaborate with skilled independent authors, many of whom could emerge as influential figures within S&S and other formats.
While the primary focus is on producing high-quality audio, Simon Maverick is open to the possibility of producing audio originals in different formats. Pinter shared that discussions have begun with various divisions within S&S about creating comprehensive projects that blend print, digital, and audio elements. He also mentioned the prospect of exploring print publications under the Simon Maverick brand.
Chris Lynch, the president and publisher at Simon & Schuster Audio, is optimistic that Simon Maverick will leverage strong audio sales and a growing interest in works by self-published authors. He emphasized the importance of uncovering independent authors who already have or deserve significant followings, affirming that the imprint’s focus is firmly on self-published creators.
Pinter clarified that the term “independent authors” primarily refers to self-published individuals who are building their own brands and connecting with readers outside conventional publishing channels. He noted that S&S is proactive in scouting talent within the independent realm, rather than waiting for submissions to come through traditional agent channels.
His experience positions him uniquely for this role. Pinter has a diverse background in both corporate publishing and indie landscapes, previously working with notable publishers before founding Polis and Agora Books, dedicated to diversity in crime literature. His impending closure of Polis in early 2024 highlighted his success in managing substantial backlist titles.
S&S president, Jonathan Karp, recognized Pinter’s entrepreneurial spirit and creativity, asserting that self-published authors represent an emerging opportunity akin to what mass market publishing once offered. He expressed a desire for S&S to actively participate in this evolving landscape.
Karp sees Simon Maverick as a strategic entry into the audio sector, noting that while it is not solely a response to the rise of platforms like Spotify, it does exemplify the growing potential for audio publishing. He believes that with established frameworks in place, Simon & Schuster Audio can provide expedited support in terms of financing, production, and distribution for indie authors embarking on their audio ventures.
Looking towards 2025, Karp is enthusiastic about the synergy of audio and self-published authors. He sees this moment as ripe for innovation, likening the endeavor to past digital-first publishing initiatives. Karp expressed optimism that this latest effort with Simon Maverick marks the right alignment of timing and market readiness.
