The much-anticipated stage musical adaptation of the acclaimed NBC series SMASH has officially commenced its rehearsals. Performances are set to begin on Tuesday, March 11, 2025, with an official opening scheduled for Thursday, April 10, 2025, at the Imperial Theatre on Broadway.
Directed by the celebrated five-time Tony Award winner Susan Stroman, the production boasts a talented cast. Notable performers include Tony nominee Robyn Hurder, who will take on the role of “Ivy,” and two-time Tony nominee Brooks Ashmanskas as “Nigel.” Other cast members include Krysta Rodriguez as “Tracy,” John Behlmann as “Jerry,” Kristine Nielsen as “Susan,” Caroline Bowman as “Karen,” Jacqueline B. Arnold as “Anita,” Bella Coppola as “Chloe,” Casey Garvin as “Charlie,” and Nicholas Matos as “Scott.”
The ensemble will also feature Wendi Bergamini, Sarah Bowden, Jacob Burns, Deanna Cudjoe, Chelle Denton, Daniel Gaymon, Merritt David Janes, Ndaya Dream Hoskins, Megan Kane, David Paul Kidder, Ian Liberto, Libby Lloyd, McGee Maddox, Connor McRory, J Savage, Jake Trammel, and Katie Webber.
Musically, SMASH promises to deliver an engaging score crafted by Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, both of whom have received Tony, Emmy, and Grammy accolades. The duo penned over two dozen songs for the original television show, many of which will be featured in the stage musical alongside newly composed pieces. Additionally, the book is penned by seasoned writers Rick Elice, a four-time Tony nominee, and Bob Martin, a Tony Award winner. Choreography will once again be in the capable hands of Joshua Bergasse, who previously choreographed the NBC series. Adding to the producing team is Jennifer Hudson, an EGOT winner, who graced the second season of the original TV series in a guest role.
Audiences can expect an exhilarating portrayal of the chaotic behind-the-scenes world as a group of Broadway heavyweights prepares for the opening night of Bombshell, an extravagant musical chronicling the life of Marilyn Monroe. The production promises a whirlwind of comedic obstacles and unexpected twists, alongside high-energy production numbers and well-loved songs like “Let Me Be Your Star” that fans of the original series will recognize.
