Cynthia Nixon Criticizes NYU and Trump Over Trans Youth Healthcare
Cynthia Nixon, known for her role in “Sex and the City,” expressed strong disapproval of New York University’s recent decision to cancel medical procedures for transgender youth. Speaking at a rally outside NYU on Monday evening, Nixon made it clear that she was “mad as hell” about the situation.
The controversy began when NYU canceled appointments for two twelve-year-olds who were scheduled to receive puberty-blocking implants, as reported by the New York Times. This decision coincided with an executive order signed by President Donald Trump, which stated that the federal government would no longer provide funding to medical professionals or institutions involved in gender-reassignment surgery or related procedures.
Nixon characterized these developments as part of a broader “assault” on transgender rights, claiming that the community has faced ongoing challenges since Trump’s election. During her speech, she emphasized the importance of supporting transgender youth, declaring, “I am here today as the mother of a proud trans man,” which drew enthusiastic applause from the assembled crowd. She also noted her connections to the trans community, mentioning that her best friend’s child is transgender and her child’s best friend is also part of the community.
Describing her personal connection to the issue, Nixon recounted how one of her children received surgery at NYU in the past. “His doctors were fantastic. His surgeon was the best we could have imagined,” she remarked. However, she expressed deep concern over the fact that other families may now find themselves unable to access similar medical care.
Nixon voiced that the thought of other children in New York being denied necessary procedures “sickens me to my core.” Yet, she found solace and motivation in the turnout at the protest, stating, “Nothing has made me feel so good as coming around the corner today and seeing you all standing here fighting for trans rights.”
The executive order signed by Trump, titled “Protecting Children From Chemical and Surgical Mutilation,” claims that a growing number of children are being subjected to irreversible medical interventions under the guise of changing their sex. Trump warned that this trend could be viewed as a negative chapter in American history and insisted that it must come to a halt.
The order also includes claims about the long-term consequences faced by transgender individuals who undergo such procedures, citing potential regret and health complications associated with early medical interventions.
Nixon, who has become increasingly active in political discourse since her unsuccessful bid for governor of New York in 2018, reaffirmed her commitment to defending transgender rights. She stated that the movement to restrict access to surgeries and puberty blockers “cannot happen” in New York, urging advocates to take a firm stand against these developments.
