Musk Mandates Productivity Reporting for Federal Employees

Billionaire Elon Musk recently announced a controversial directive requiring all federal employees to report on their productivity as a condition for retaining their positions. Musk, who serves as a senior advisor to President Donald Trump, emphasized that employees will be expected to submit a brief account of their work achievements over the past week.

In a post on X, Musk indicated that employees would receive an email prompting them to account for their productivity. He specified that failure to respond would be interpreted as a resignation. “Consistent with President @realDonaldTrump’s instructions, all federal employees will shortly receive an email requesting to understand what they got done last week,” he wrote. “Failure to respond will be taken as a resignation.”

Elon Musk further clarified the expectations, stating the report should be concise and take no more than five minutes to prepare. The deadline for employees to submit their responses is set for 11:59 p.m. on Monday.

Clarifying Expectations

Musk reassured employees that the requirements are modest. “To be clear, the bar is very low here. An email with some bullet points that make any sense at all is acceptable! Should take less than 5 mins to write,” he commented.

In reaction to a summary of recent White House actions—including President Trump’s executive orders regarding in vitro fertilization and immigration policies—Musk remarked, “That would be a very impressive and long list indeed for you! However, the passing grade is literally just ‘Can you send an email with words that make any sense at all?'” He reiterated that the threshold for meeting expectations is quite minimal.

A representative from the U.S. Office of Personnel Management (OPM) confirmed Musk’s plan, stating that it stems from the Trump Administration’s goal of ensuring an efficient and responsible federal workforce. The OPM is requesting a succinct summary of employees’ activities from the previous week, which should be submitted by the specified deadline.

In contrast, new FBI Director Kash Patel has advised agency employees to refrain from responding to the OPM email at this time. According to Patel, “The FBI, through the Office of the Director, is in charge of all of our review processes… For now, please pause any responses.” This directive raises questions about the uniformity and implementation of the productivity reporting across different federal agencies.

Union Opposition

The American Federation of Government Employees (AFGE), a significant labor union, condemned the new reporting requirement. They stated their intent to “challenge any unlawful terminations of our members and federal employees across the country.” The union criticized the measure, suggesting that it is inconsiderate for federal employees to have to justify their roles to someone they describe as an “out-of-touch, privileged, unelected billionaire who has never performed one single hour of honest public service in his life.”

This move comes amid efforts led by Musk and the newly established Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) aimed at identifying and eliminating perceived waste within the federal government.
