ABB announced a substantial investment of $120 million aimed at enhancing the production capabilities of its low-voltage electrification products within the United States. This expansion is designed to address the growing demands from various key sectors, such as data centers, utilities, and construction.

The engineering powerhouse, headquartered in Zurch, Switzerland, plans to establish a new advanced manufacturing facility in Selmer, Tennessee, which is expected to generate 50 new job opportunities. Furthermore, the company will also expand its existing operations in Senatobia, Mississippi, effectively doubling its manufacturing space there and adding around 200 new positions.

“With the steady rise in demand for cutting-edge electrification technologies linked to the expansion of critical sectors like utilities and data centers, this initiative is key for our continued growth in the U.S.,” remarked ABB CEO Morten Wierod. “These new facilities in Selmer and Senatobia will enable our U.S. customers to stay ahead of the curve during the energy transition while achieving their performance, productivity, and energy efficiency objectives.”

These developments exemplify ABB’s dedication to bolstering its U.S. operations. Over the last three years, the firm has invested in excess of $500 million within the country. Notably, in October 2024, it inaugurated a $100 million manufacturing and innovation center focused on industrial electric drives in New Berlin, Wisconsin.

Additionally, ABB is gearing up to launch a $40 million manufacturing site in Albuquerque, New Mexico, slated for completion in April 2025, aimed at producing modern technologies to enhance the resilience of power grids.

The company has also earned recognition for its technical advancements, having received the 2024 RBR50 Robotics Innovation Award for its modular industrial robot arms.

ABB allocates $80M to Tennessee site

In line with its commitment to its U.S. operations, ABB will invest $80 million in the construction of a new facility stretching across 320,000 square feet in Selmer, Tennessee. This initiative is part of a strategy to replace the current site, anticipated to boost production capacity by over 50%.

The facility will focus on the manufacturing of key electrical distribution components required for large-scale industrial and technology-centric applications. This includes essential systems for data centers, manufacturing plants, and high-rise residential and commercial structures where reliable, high-quality power supply is imperative.

ABB’s innovative busway and bus plug solutions are designed to streamline power distribution, allowing for straightforward expansion or modifications without the complexities of rewiring. Set to commence operations in the fourth quarter of 2026, this new facility is projected to create an additional 50 specialized jobs, elevating the workforce in Selmer by more than 25%.

Expanded facility to produce advanced circuit breakers

In tandem, ABB is set to invest $40 million to significantly enlarge its Senatobia, Mississippi, facility, allowing it to better serve the increasing market demand for low-voltage circuit breakers across North America.

The advanced industrial circuit breakers manufactured by ABB are crucial for ensuring robust power reliability, particularly for the growth of data centers, modern manufacturing facilities, and renewable energy microgrids. The expansion will cater to North American clients who are in the process of upgrading aging power systems and extending their operational capabilities.

Anticipated to open in the second quarter of 2026, this facility expansion will add 200 jobs, raising the workforce at the Senatobia site to over 1,000 employees.

In 2024, ABB’s revenue in the U.S. approached $9 billion, which constituted about 27% of the total revenue for the ABB Group. With a workforce of approximately 17,000 employees, the company operates nearly 40 manufacturing, distribution, and operational facilities across 20 states, which include nine significant research and development centers.

Currently, around 75-80% of the products ABB markets in the U.S. are produced domestically. Since 2010, the company has directed over $14 billion towards capacity expansion initiatives and mergers and acquisitions within the U.S. market.
