Scottie Scheffler, currently ranked as the world’s No. 1 golfer, has etched his name into golf history as the inaugural player to defend his title at The Players Championship. As he gears up for the challenge of achieving an extraordinary three-peat, he shares insights into his memorable victory from the previous year in a column reflecting on his experience.
The accomplishment of winning back-to-back titles at such a prestigious event is indeed a rarity. “Victory is hard to come by, and I feel fortunate to have secured my place as the first repeat champion in this flagship tournament,” Scheffler expressed.

During the 2024 Players Championship, Scheffler faced the additional challenge of a neck injury that surfaced in the second round. He described the discomfort as significant, especially during putting. Nevertheless, his competitive spirit drove him to persist through the pain with the hope that he would recover. “I did everything I could to stay in the game, thankful for the effective treatment from my physio that helped by the weekend,” he added.
When dealing with acute injuries, recovery can be a daily challenge. “Waking up each morning after an injury and feeling a bit better is a small victory,” he said, noting that Saturday brought him closer to his normal state. He was able to execute some positive shots on the course that day.
By Sunday, Scheffler found himself close to his regular form, allowing him to approach the final round with a renewed sense of optimism. “My goal was to start strong on the front nine, believing that a solid opening would set the tone for the rest of the day,” he recounted.
Despite a cautious start, where he parred the first three holes, an eagle on the fourth hole reignited his momentum. “That eagle really boosted my confidence. The rest of the back nine felt great, and I was pleased with my performance,” he said, concluding his final round with a remarkable score of 64.
Winning with such a strong finish reinforces all the hard work put into preparation, according to Scheffler. “The satisfaction of finishing on top is immense,” he added, highlighting the dual mental and physical rigors of competing at such a level. “Being in the final groups at events like The Players can be taxing, yet it’s also exhilarating,” he remarked, especially considering the physical strain his neck presented during the tournament.
“Competing in contention is unparalleled,” he stated. “We play to challenge ourselves against the best in the game, and to be able to thrive in that atmosphere is incredibly rewarding.” He acknowledged the stiff competition he faced, noting that many players showcased exceptional golfing skills, with several finishing just below his own achievement at 20 under.
