Nevada’s legal authorities have announced that 20 individuals are facing charges related to a violent incident in a maximum-security prison that resulted in the deaths of three inmates last year. The altercation took place at Ely State Prison on July 30, leading to significant injuries among others involved.

The Nevada Attorney General’s Office confirmed that the final arrest linked to this case was executed on March 5. The deceased inmates were identified as Anthony Williams, 41, Connor Brown, 22, and Zacharia Luz, 42. Importantly, no prison staff were reported injured during this disturbance.

Charges emerging from this investigation include first-degree murder and attempted murder, specifically linked to the alleged involvement of a criminal gang. However, the exact number of defendants facing these serious charges remains unspecified.

A report from CBS affiliate KLAS-TV indicates that the conflict likely stemmed from ongoing tension between rival gangs within the prison population, raising concerns about potential retaliation in the aftermath.

Ely State Prison, which accommodates nearly 1,200 inmates, is one of six correctional facilities operated by the state. It serves as the location for Nevada’s death row and is equipped with a lethal injection chamber that has yet to be used. According to the Death Penalty Information Center, Nevada currently holds 59 inmates on death row, with the last execution occurring in 2006.

Conditions within Nevada’s prisons have come under scrutiny from various advocates, particularly during extreme weather conditions that impact inmate welfare. In late 2022, reports emerged indicating that several inmates at Ely State Prison participated in a hunger strike to protest what they and their families described as dangerous conditions and insufficient food supplies.

Speaking on the matter, Nevada Attorney General Aaron Ford emphasized the state’s commitment to justice, stating, “The pursuit of justice does not stop at the prison gates, and those responsible for the deaths of the three inmates at Ely State Prison will be held accountable.” He assured that there would be a firm response to any violence or misconduct occurring within the state’s correctional facilities, affirming that such issues will be addressed vigorously within the confines of the law.
