The Challenges and Shortcomings of Jada Pinkett Smith’s Directorial Debut

Jada Pinkett Smith has established herself as a prominent figure in the entertainment world since her rise as an actress in the 1990s. Prior to her foray into directing, she had crafted several music videos, including works for her husband, Will Smith. However, her feature directorial debut arrived in 2008 with the film The Human Contract, which she also penned.

The narrative revolves around Julian Wright, portrayed by Jason Clarke, a businessman navigating the turmoil of a divorce while grappling with his demanding work life and a dysfunctional family. In the midst of his struggles, he encounters Michael, played by Paz Vega, leading to an intense, albeit troubled, relationship that traverses both emotional and physical boundaries.

Both Julian and Michael exhibit significant emotional distress. Julian embodies a volatile temperament, resorting to physical confrontations with both objects and people around him. His relationship with his excessively religious mother is fraught with tension, compounded by familial complications, including his sister Rita, who suffers abuse at the hands of her husband. Conversely, Michael carries her own burdens, having a history of self-harm and an open marriage, which adds further complexity to her relationship with Julian.

‘The Human Contract’ Boasts aStar-Studded Cast

Notable actors populate The Human Contract, enhancing its initial appeal. Jason Clarke and Paz Vega lead the story, supported by Ted Danson as E.J. Winters, Julian’s boss, who pressures him to adhere to family values as they work toward a billion-dollar merger. Idris Elba also features prominently as Larry, Julian’s friend and attorney, who struggles with the fallout of Julian’s poor decisions. Joanna Cassidy plays the critical role of Julian’s mother, Rose, while Jada Pinkett Smith steps in as his sister, Rita. Despite the impressive roster of talent, the film ultimately fell short of expectations.

Even as audiences appreciated the quality of performances and the film’s cinematographic execution—which bore a resemblance to the neo-noir style of Collateral—the story itself left many viewers unsatisfied. Critics noted the narrative’s lack of focus and depth, as it failed to provide a coherent understanding of the characters’ motivations, resulting in a sense of ambiguity about its purpose.

Unresolved Plot Points

Significant plot developments come to a head when Julian confronts his past after a violent incident involving Michael, culminating in her hospitalization. In an attempt to express his remorse, Julian shares a symbolic gesture with her, but this encounter feels more like manipulation than redemption. His complex relationship with his sister Rita, who serves as a catalyst for his anger, remains equally unresolved; Julian’s violent outburst against her abusive husband contradicts his intentions to protect Rita, ultimately complicating his character further.

The film explores Julian’s struggles which are deeply rooted in unresolved “mommy issues.” His fraught relationship with Rose is hinted to be the source of his emotional turmoil. A climactic scene reveals childhood traumas, yet instead of providing catharsis, it amplifies their dysfunction. The exchange between Julian and Rose, rife with confrontation, lacks the necessary resolution to suggest healing or understanding.

A Well-Acted Yet Flawed Undertaking

Despite its commendable execution and acting caliber, The Human Contract leaves viewers grappling with unanswered questions. The film avoids straightforward storytelling, instead opting for an ambiguous portrayal of trauma and conflict. While it aims to explore themes of emotional pain and its cyclical nature, it ultimately fails to deliver a clear narrative. The lack of character development, combined with superficial relationships, renders the movie a cautionary tale of how creative ambition can sometimes falter in execution.
