Nintendo Introduces New Preorder System for Upcoming Switch Model
Nintendo has announced a novel approach to preorders for its upcoming Switch model, targeting scalpers and ensuring dedicated gamers have priority. To qualify for a preorder directly from Nintendo, players must demonstrate commitment by logging at least 50 hours of gameplay on the original Switch console. This system is designed to prioritize die-hard fans who have invested time in the platform.
The details of this policy were shared on Nintendo’s preorder registration page, which outlines that individuals who meet the gameplay threshold and hold a minimum of a 12-month Nintendo Switch Online membership will be given preference for preorder invitations. This strategy aims to foster a fairer purchasing process for genuine players while deterring scalpers from monopolizing stock.
To facilitate this new verification mechanism, players need to have consented to share their gameplay data with Nintendo. Users can confirm their consent status by logging into their Nintendo accounts and reviewing their privacy settings.
Nintendo has scheduled the distribution of its initial preorder invitations to commence on May 8th, 2025. Following this, additional invitations will be sent periodically, with the goal of eventually opening up purchases to all consumers. Recipients of these preorder emails will have a window of 72 hours to secure their orders for the new Switch model. For wider accessibility, preorders at participating retailers will become available for everyone on April 9th in North America and April 8th in Europe.
This proactive move by Nintendo not only aims to ensure that genuine gamers have the first opportunity to purchase the new console but also reflects a growing trend among gaming companies to combat the resale market that has often hindered fan access to popular products.
