22,000 Pounds of Johnsonville Bratwurst Recalled Due to Possible Contamination

If you intended to enjoy sausages this week, it would be wise to verify the brands you have in your possession.

On Saturday, well-known sausage manufacturer Johnsonville revealed a voluntary recall encompassing roughly 22,672 pounds of its cheddar bratwurst product. This recall was initiated due to potential contamination with foreign materials, specifically hard plastic, as noted by the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS). The contamination concern arose after two consumers reported discovering plastic pieces in their bratwurst.

The specific cheddar bratwurst subject to the recall was produced on February 5, 2025. The recall affects only the 19-ounce sealed firm tray packages, which contain five pieces of Johnsonville Brats Cheddar Bratwurst. Consumers can identify the recalled products by the package code B9FOD and the establishment number “Est. 1647” displayed on the product label.

These affected products were distributed to retail locations across several states, including Georgia, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Michigan, Minnesota, Ohio, Tennessee, Virginia, and Wisconsin. Shoppers in these areas should be particularly vigilant.

Fortunately, there have been no reported cases of injury related to this recall. However, individuals who believe they may have consumed the affected product and are experiencing illness should seek immediate medical attention.

The FSIS has expressed concern that some of these products may still be in consumers’ freezers. They recommend that anyone who purchased these items should avoid consuming them. Instead, the products should be discarded or returned to the point of purchase.

For additional inquiries regarding this recall, consumers can contact Amanda Fritsch, the consumer relations coordinator for Johnsonville, at 888-556-2728 or via email.

This incident is reminiscent of other recent food recalls due to the presence of foreign objects. In late March, the FSIS announced a recall of over 29,000 pounds of Chomps ready-to-eat beef sticks produced by Idaho Smokehouse Partners, following reports of potential metal contamination. Additionally, early April saw confectionery brand Tony’s Chocolonely Inc. issue a voluntary recall of certain chocolate bar flavors due to the risk of small stone contamination. Such events serve as an important reminder to stay informed about food recalls announced by federal agencies.
