Rory McIlroy Achieves Career Grand Slam at The Masters
Rory McIlroy has etched his name among golf legends following his victory at The Masters on Sunday.
With this win, McIlroy has become the sixth player in history to secure a career Grand Slam, having triumphed in all four major championships: The Masters, The PGA Championship, the U.S. Open, and The Open Championship.
This achievement at Augusta National Golf Club has been particularly significant for McIlroy, who had not secured a major title since winning The Open in 2014.
After claiming victory over Justin Rose in a playoff, one of the five previous Grand Slam champions extended his congratulations to McIlroy, recognizing the monumental nature of this achievement. “Welcome to the club,” Tiger Woods remarked on X. “Completing the grand slam at Augusta is something special. Your determination during this round and throughout your journey is evident, and now you’re a part of history. Proud of you!”
Woods was notably absent from this year’s event, still recovering from an Achilles injury that has left him unable to walk properly. Although it was anticipated that his season would be on hold, uncertainty lingered regarding his presence at the Champions Dinner on Tuesday night.
Unfortunately, Woods did not join the gathering to enjoy Scottie Scheffler’s meticulously prepared meal.
Over the years, Woods and McIlroy have developed a strong rapport, both as Nike-sponsored athletes and as elite figures in the sport since McIlroy turned professional. In his post-round interview, McIlroy shared that Woods had been among the Grand Slam champions who consistently encouraged him, expressing belief that the green jacket would ultimately be his.
Before McIlroy’s victory, only five golfers had achieved the Grand Slam: Woods, Gene Sarazen, Gary Player, Ben Hogan, and Jack Nicklaus.
The climax of McIlroy’s win unfolded with notable drama, as he experienced a rollercoaster of emotions in the final round. After missing a par putt on the 72nd hole, he faced a playoff with Rose.
Demonstrating resilience, McIlroy delivered a remarkable drive and approach on the 18th hole, positioning himself for a short birdie putt that would seal his victory.
As the green jacket was placed on McIlroy by 2024 Masters champion Scottie Scheffler in Butler Cabin, a profound sense of relief was palpable for the Northern Irishman, marking a historic moment in his golfing career.
