Suman Ghosh’s Bengali Film Puratawn Explores the Deep Bond Between Mother and Daughter

Sharmila Tagore is stepping back into the limelight with her much-anticipated role in Puratawn, a film that marks her return to Bengali cinema after a 16-year hiatus. This cinematic venture also stars Rituparna Sengupta and is creating significant excitement ahead of its release this weekend.

Soha Ali Khan, Sharmila’s daughter and fellow actress, has shared a loving tribute on social media to honor her mother’s triumph in returning to the screen, posting behind-the-scenes images of Sharmila from the film. In her post, she expressed admiration for her mother, stating, “Celebrating Amma in #Puratwan – her wonderful return to Bengali cinema after almost two decades. As someone once told me – for us, Sharmila Thakur is not a person, she’s an emotion!” This heartfelt message was met with warm responses from fans who praised Sharmila’s timeless beauty and elegance.

Puratawn is directed by Suman Ghosh and intricately weaves the story of a mother-daughter relationship, portrayed by Sharmila and Rituparna. The narrative addresses critical issues such as memory loss associated with aging and the enduring impact of the past. Alongside the lead actresses, the film features Indraneil Sengupta in a notable role. The film has already garnered acclaim, winning the Best Feature Film award at the Houston Indian Film Festival, and receiving honors for Best Film and Best Actress for Sharmila Tagore at the Washington DC South Asian Film Festival.

In a candid interview with PTI, Sharmila disclosed that Puratawn will be her last project in Bengali cinema due to health challenges she faces. She expressed her deep love for Bengali films and her connection to Kolkata, but acknowledged her limitations regarding physical fitness for the demands of acting. She stated, “I love doing Bengali films. I love everything about Kolkata, but I am not as fit (for acting in shoots) as required due to my health conditions.”

While Puratawn marks a significant return for Tagore, it is worth noting that she made her acting comeback in 2023 through the film Gulmohar, where she starred alongside Manoj Bajpayee and Amol Palekar. This series, which premiered on JioHotstar, received accolades for its casting, performances, and storytelling. Meanwhile, Soha Ali Khan is poised to appear in the upcoming film Chhorii 2, directed by Vishal Furia and featuring Nushrratt Bharuccha and Gashmeer Mahajani in lead roles.
