Sen. Van Hollen Advocates for Rights of Deported Maryland Man

Senator Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) expressed his commitment to safeguarding the rights of Kilmar Abrego Garcia, who was recently deported, amid allegations from President Trump and his supporters regarding Garcia’s legal history. Van Hollen’s stance underscores the broader principles of due process and legal rights for all individuals, regardless of their immigration status.

During an interview on ABC News’s “This Week,” host Jonathan Karl probed Van Hollen about the “serious allegations of abuse” leveled against Garcia by his wife in court. Trump has since spotlighted these claims, raising questions about the senator’s support.

“Certainly, everyone in this country, including undocumented immigrants, holds rights. However, are you not concerned about supporting someone with a questionable history?” asked Karl.

In response, Van Hollen clarified that his defense is centered on the principles of due process rather than on Garcia’s personal history. He stated, “I am not defending the man; I’m defending his right to due process.” He referenced the Trump administration’s acknowledgment in court that Garcia was wrongfully detained and deported, asserting, “My mission is to uphold the rule of law because undermining it for one person threatens it for all.”

Van Hollen recently traveled to El Salvador to ensure the wellbeing of Abrego Garcia, who had lived in Maryland with his wife until his removal in March. Following his deportation, he was placed in a facility known for its harsh treatment of detainees.

Despite prior claims from the Trump administration that Garcia was mistakenly deported, officials have intensified their accusations, labeling him a gang member while defying a court directive to facilitate his release.

“If the administration has these concerns, they ought to present their evidence in court,” Van Hollen argued. He challenged the administration’s narrative, saying, “The Trump administration is attempting to alter the narrative. They should take their facts to the court, rather than broadcasting on social media.” He referenced Judge Xinis’s comments in the case, noting that there was no evidence tying Garcia to MS-13 or any terrorist activities, as stated multiple times in her ruling.

Van Hollen also acknowledged the deep concerns of Abrego Garcia’s wife, who has been an active voice in calling for his return. “It is she who is pleading for his return so that his rights can be safeguarded,” stated Van Hollen.

Jennifer Vasquez Sura, Garcia’s wife, expressed gratitude for Van Hollen’s efforts, stating, “My children and my prayers have been answered. Our family and community’s struggle for justice is resonating, as I now know my husband is alive.” She emphasized the uncertainty surrounding Garcia’s situation and her determination to continue advocating for his return, thanking Van Hollen and others who have supported her family throughout this process.
