Health Secretary Claims Autism Impact Exceeds Covid-19
Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr is standing by his controversial assertion that autism presents a greater challenge than Covid-19, which has led to the deaths of over 7 million globally.
During a recent appearance on Fox News, Kennedy escalated his claims, stating that autism is “20 times worse than Covid-19” concerning its economic, social, and moral ramifications on society. This statement follows a declaration made just days earlier, in which he emphasized that the virus predominantly affected the elderly.
Earlier in the month, Kennedy announced plans for a comprehensive approach to identify what he refers to as the “epidemic” of autism, pledging a “massive testing and research effort.” Scientists have been investigating potential factors influencing autism beyond genetics for many years, and Kennedy has indicated a commitment to deliver findings by September.
Kennedy stated on Fox, “I announced that we’re going to find the cause of autism” after noting a conversation with former President Trump, who expressed a desire for answers within a year.
Just prior to this, he asserted that the effects of autism far surpassed those of Covid-19, remarking that it affects the younger population disproportionately as opposed to the elderly who suffered most during the pandemic.
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the rising number of autism diagnoses is attributed to better diagnostic awareness and practices rather than any sudden surge in cases, countering Kennedy’s claims of a widespread epidemic.
Kennedy’s remarks about autism received pushback, particularly after he stated that “autism destroys families” in a press conference earlier this year, which drew significant criticism. He described individuals with autism as unable to contribute economically or socially, highlighting the challenges they face.
Critics, including Alison Singer, president of the Autism Science Foundation, condemned Kennedy’s framing, arguing that it diminishes the value and achievements of individuals on the autism spectrum. Rosie O’Donnell, whose son is autistic, also voiced her disappointment and urged Kennedy to reconsider his statements.
In addition to his claims about autism, Kennedy reiterated falsehoods relating to Covid-19 vaccinations during his Fox News interview. He suggested that the vaccine poses risks to children that outweigh their minimal risk from Covid-19.
“The recommendation for children was always dubious,” Kennedy asserted. “Most kids don’t have a significant risk.”
Contrary to his claims, extensive research conducted by the Food and Drug Administration maintains that Covid-19 vaccines are safe for children, with the CDC emphasizing ongoing safety assessments.
