What you need to know

Instagram has officially introduced a new video editing application called “Edits,” which is now available to users on both Android and iOS platforms worldwide. This innovative app is equipped with sophisticated editing features that allow for clip-level precision and creative aspects such as green screen effects and AI-driven image animations. A notable feature is the ability for creators to track real-time statistics, which provide insights into viewer engagement on their Reels, assisting them in assessing the success of their content.

On April 22, Instagram unveiled the Edits app, aiming to offer users a comprehensive set of free editing functionalities. The app is designed to streamline the creative process for users, enabling them to produce and edit Reels seamlessly without the need to shift between multiple editing tools and Instagram itself.

The inception of the Edits app was hinted at earlier this year by Instagram’s chief, Adam Mosseri, particularly during a period when TikTok and its associated video editing application, CapCut, faced temporary unavailability in the U.S. This situation prompted Meta to leverage the opportunity to deliver an app reminiscent of CapCut after observing the market dynamics, similar to their release of Threads following Elon Musk’s acquisition of X, formerly known as Twitter. After a brief delay from its initially planned February release, the app is now live.

The Edits app enhances the editing experience by providing tools that allow users to modify video resolution, frame rates, and dynamic ranges effortlessly.

Like Instagram, the app offers various fonts and text animations that users can customize with different colors. Moreover, it provides access to licensed music, sound effects, and voiceover options, along with an assortment of video filters to improve the auditory and visual appeal of the Reels.

According to its description, Edits also features audio enhancement tools designed to clarify voices and eliminate background noise. Additional functionalities, such as touch-ups, green screen capabilities, and AI-driven image animation, empower creators to actualize their imaginative concepts.

What distinguishes Edits is its live dashboard, which presents creators with a comprehensive view of their videos’ performance in real time, detailing engagement levels, click rates, and average view durations. This feature enables creators to evaluate whether their content resonates with their audience or if adjustments are needed in their future strategies.

The Edits app allows users to export or save their edited videos without any watermarks, facilitating easy sharing across various social media platforms.

The Edits app is available for free and can be downloaded from the Play Store and the App Store.
