Motorola is poised to introduce new smartphones featuring artificial intelligence (AI) applications from Perplexity and Microsoft, according to recent statements from a Google executive. The information was disclosed during an antitrust trial currently underway in the United States, where Google faces allegations of monopolizing the online search market. Importantly, the implications of this case also encompass Google’s advancements in AI technologies, including its Gemini product line. A notable event is set for April 24, where Motorola is expected to unveil the Razr 60 series alongside the Edge 60 Pro.

Motorola Could Offer Multiple AI Apps With the Upcoming Razr 60 Series

As reported by Bloomberg, Peter Fitzgerald, Google’s Vice President for Global Partnerships, Platforms & Devices, confirmed that forthcoming Motorola devices will integrate AI applications from both Perplexity and Microsoft. He also mentioned that Samsung is exploring options to incorporate similar AI technologies into their devices.

This statement was made during Fitzgerald’s testimony in the antitrust lawsuit, which arose in January 2023, alleging that Google has illegally dominated the online search domain. A significant aspect of this case has been Google’s financial arrangement with Apple, making Google’s search engine the default option on iPhones.

Current discussions within the Justice Department suggest a desire for Judge Amit Mehta to determine a means to dismantle Google’s alleged monopoly on online search. Furthermore, the scope of the investigation extends to Google’s AI products, including the Gemini suite.

The executive’s remarks were intended to clarify that Google does not restrict device manufacturers from pre-installing alternative voice assistants or AI applications. Letters submitted to the court underscore that there are no prohibitive clauses in agreements with device manufacturers.

This revelation implies that the imminent Motorola Razr 60 series and Edge 60 Pro could ship with various AI applications already installed. Recent reports indicate that Perplexity has reached an agreement with Motorola to feature its AI-driven virtual assistant on the company’s devices. However, it remains uncertain whether Motorola will designate any of these applications as the default AI assistant on their smartphones.
