Santa Monica Students Engage with NASA Astronaut Jonny Kim

Students from Santa Monica, California, are set to have an extraordinary interaction with NASA astronaut Jonny Kim as he responds to various science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) questions. This event will take place aboard the International Space Station (ISS), where Kim will communicate with students during a prerecorded session.

Viewers can catch the 20-minute live broadcast on the NASA STEM YouTube Channel at 12:10 p.m. EDT on Tuesday, April 29.

The event is being organized by Santa Monica High School, which is Jonny Kim’s former school. In addition, students from Roosevelt Elementary School and Lincoln Middle School will participate, aiming to motivate young minds to pursue their dreams and nurture a passion for learning through curiosity and service.

For over 24 years, the ISS has been a hub for astronauts who continuously live and work in orbit, conducting scientific research, testing new technologies, and honing the skills necessary for future explorations beyond our planet. The astronauts maintain a round-the-clock connection with NASA’s Mission Control Center in Houston via the Space Communications and Navigation (SCaN) Near Space Network.

The research and technological advancements conducted on the ISS not only aid humanity but also set the stage for upcoming missions by NASA. As part of the Artemis initiative, astronauts are slated to return to the Moon, a critical step towards preparing for human exploration of Mars. This aligns with NASA’s commitment to inspire the next generation of explorers and reinforce the United States’ leadership role in space endeavors.
