The Academy confirms AI-generated films can vie for Oscars, emphasizing human contribution in awards decision.
Films that utilize artificial intelligence (AI) can now compete for Oscars, according to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences.
On Monday, the Academy announced new regulations confirming that the integration of AI and similar digital technologies does not inherently favor or disadvantage films during the nomination process. Generative AI has played a role in several Oscar-nominated films as of March, yet the Academy stressed the importance of human creativity and involvement in determining award recipients.
Recommended by the Academy’s Science and Technology Council, these guidelines clarify the permissible use of AI in filmmaking. Furthermore, members of the Academy are now required to view all nominated films in a category before participating in the final voting process.
The influence of AI in the film industry has been underscored by notable examples, such as Adrian Brody’s performance in *The Brutalist*, where AI assisted in refining his accent. Similarly, AI technology was employed to enhance vocal performances in *Emilia Perez*, which won an Academy Award for Best Musical. This technology’s capacity to mimic voices and subtly alter performances is becoming increasingly prevalent in both film and music sectors.
The updated rules from the Academy state, “The academy and each branch will judge the achievement, taking into account the degree to which a human was at the heart of the creative authorship when choosing which movie to award.”
In a significant development for the Kannada film sector, Narasimha Murthy, a priest from Siddehalli village near Bengaluru, has produced *Love You*, billed as the first AI-generated film in Sandalwood. Operating with a limited budget and resources, Murthy collaborated with Nuthan, a graphic designer familiar with AI technologies, to realize his vision.
