Steve ‘Mongo’ McMichael, a revered figure in the history of the Chicago Bears, has passed away following a protracted struggle with amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS).

The announcement of his death came just hours after his wife, Misty, disclosed that McMichael would be transitioning to hospice care due to his deteriorating health as a result of the disease.

Diagnosed with ALS in 2021, McMichael faced significant challenges, ultimately becoming paralyzed from the shoulders down.

His friend, Jarrett Payton, shared the news, stating, “With deep sorrow, I share that Steve McMichael passed at 5:28 PM after a brave fight with #ALS, surrounded by loved ones. I’m grateful to have been with him in his final moments. Please keep Steve and his family in your prayers.”

During an illustrious 15-year NFL career, McMichael established himself as one of the top defensive tackles in the league’s history. He amassed 95 sacks, recorded 14 forced fumbles, and achieved one interception over his tenure.

McMichael was instrumental in leading the Chicago Bears to victory in Super Bowl XX and earned First-team All-Pro honors on two occasions. His contributions to the sport were recognized when he was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2024.

The NFL issued a heartfelt statement reflecting on McMichael’s legacy, expressing sorrow over the loss of the Super Bowl champion and Hall of Famer, and extending condolences to his family and loved ones.

In addition to his football career, McMichael ventured into professional wrestling, making appearances in World Championship Wrestling (WCW) where he competed against iconic figures such as Hulk Hogan.

Ric Flair, a wrestling legend and long-time friend of McMichael, took to social media to pay tribute, stating, “The World Just Lost The Incredible Steve ‘Mongo’ McMichael! He Was My Best Friend Through It All! An Amazing Athlete And Human Being! I Have The Fondest Memories Working With Him, And This Is An Extremely Heartbreaking Loss For Me!”

Flair concluded his message with a heartfelt farewell: “I Love You Mongo! You Fought One Hell Of A Battle! Rest In Peace My Friend!”

Beyond his athletic prowess, McMichael also achieved coaching success, leading the Chicago Slaughter to a CIFL Championship in 2009.

McMichael’s remarkable journey in sports and life ended at the age of 67.

Rest in peace.
