Reflecting on Peter Krause’s Final Moments in 9-1-1

The emotional depth of Peter Krause’s performance in the death scene of his character, Bobby Nash, in 9-1-1 has not gone unnoticed. Showrunner Tim Minear and the cast, as well as the audience, have all expressed their admiration for Krause’s portrayal, especially during this pivotal moment in the series.

Rob Lowe, who portrayed Owen Strand in the spinoff series 9-1-1: Lone Star, praised Krause’s acting, describing it as “beautifully written” and “beautifully acted.” He emphasized the importance of dramatic shifts in long-running shows, suggesting that sometimes character exits can rejuvenate a series. “It will never be the same without Peter, who was, from the beginning, just such an amazing actor,” Lowe noted, highlighting Krause’s nuanced performance in that emotional scene.

Bobby Nash’s storyline culminated in a heart-wrenching moment in Season 8, Episode 15, where he succumbed to a super-strain of Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic Fever. The tragic turn came after a harrowing incident involving the first responders battling a fire at a lab, where a significant explosion left Bobby infected. Demonstrating his selflessness, Bobby made the ultimate sacrifice by giving his remaining dose of the anti-viral medication to his colleague, Chimney, only revealing his own sickness after the crew had safely evacuated.

Minear emphasized that the decision to write Bobby out was driven purely by creative choices. “Nobody wanted Peter to leave, most of all me… it would’ve been comfortable to keep everything status quo,” he reflected, acknowledging the need for change in a first responder show where moments of life and death are crucial. “It just felt like it was time,” he concluded.

In discussing the execution of that poignant scene, Minear credited Krause with influencing a critical moment. He described the challenge of balancing the intense and tragic elements of Bobby’s passing without veering into horror. Minear highlighted an important choice made by Krause: “It was Peter’s idea to turn away from Athena and go to that table and kind of get into a prayerful posture.” This decision added an uplifting layer to an otherwise tragic scene, deftly maintaining a poignant and non-linear narrative as the emotional gravity unfolded.

9-1-1 airs Thursdays at 8/7c on ABC.
