Katy Perry’s recent announcement of her Lifetimes Tour was met with excitement, particularly when she indicated to Rolling Stone that her setlist would feature “deep cuts” not previously performed live. True to her promise, during the tour’s opening night in Mexico City on Wednesday, she revisited the lesser-known track “Not Like the Movies” from her acclaimed album Teenage Dream, marking its first performance in over a decade.
Wearing a striking pink latex dress complemented by whimsical cotton-candy shoes, Perry energized the crowd as she was joined by her band for the 2010 track. The lyrics resonated with fans, expressing a mix of longing and self-reflection: “They say you know, when you know/I don’t know,” she sang, capturing the emotional essence of the song.
The concert’s “Choose Your Own Adventure” segment offered attendees the unique opportunity to vote on songs from her various musical eras, which varied from show to show. Along with the deeply nostalgic “Not Like the Movies,” Perry also performed the highly requested hit “The One That Got Away.” This interactive element of the show showcased a wide range of her discography, including her debut gospel album, Katy Hudson, revealing her artistic evolution.
Following the performance, Perry expressed her gratitude to her fans via Instagram, sharing her excitement with, “Muchas gracias, Mexico City Con amor, Tia Katy,” wrote Perry.
The concert featured a video game-inspired theme, reinforcing Perry’s creative approach as she performed songs from her latest album 143, alongside her most popular tracks. Captivating videos from the night showcased Perry floating above the audience, particularly during her new songs “Nirvana” and the show opening number, “Artificial.”

Perry elaborated on her artistic philosophy in an interview with Rolling Stone, stating, “I have a responsibility to the audience to give them that sing-along, to create that moment, and to bring out some nostalgia. But as an artist, I have a responsibility to myself to stay true to my art. So I’ll be introducing some new songs…. So, in the ‘Lifetimes’ regard, yeah, we are going deep.” This dual commitment to her fans and her artistry highlights her unique position in the pop music landscape.
Perry’s last major tour took place in 2017 in support of her album Witness. Since then, she has also hosted a successful residency in Las Vegas named Play, featuring 80 performances from 2021 to 2023. Her Lifetimes Tour will continue with upcoming performances in Monterrey before shifting to various U.S. cities, starting with Houston next month.
