The End of the DJI Phantom Era

In 2019, DJI firmly stated that it wasn’t phasing out the Phantom series, a distinguished line of drones that significantly contributed to the company’s success. However, the recent announcement marks the official discontinuation of the last two models, the Phantom 4 Pro and Phantom 4 Advanced, with no subsequent updates expected for the Phantom range.

Although DJI did not pioneer the concept of readily available flying quadcopter cameras—the original Phantom launched in 2013, following Parrot’s AR Drone, which hit the market in 2010—the Phantom stood out as one of the first widely embraced models. It quickly gained traction among consumers and professionals in the video production arena. Numerous manufacturers sought to replicate the design, resulting in a plethora of clones that made the unique silhouette of the Phantom synonymous with the drone industry itself; its image often appeared on signs prohibiting drones in public spaces.

Despite its historical significance, DJI seems to have outgrown the Phantom brand. The company’s current lineup now features sleeker, more rectangular drone designs equipped with foldable legs for enhanced portability. Additionally, DJI has diversified its offerings with various models targeting different market segments, from the high-end Inspire series to the more accessible Mavic, Air, Mini, and the newly introduced Flip line.

Recent leaks from reliable sources suggest that DJI is on the verge of unveiling a new Mavic 4 Pro, along with a forthcoming Mini 5 model, signaling a shift in focus away from the Phantom legacy.

We have contacted DJI for an official comment regarding the discontinuation of the Phantom series and expect a response shortly.
