New Adaptation of *Miami Vice* in Development
Anthony Yerkovich and Michael Mann’s original Miami Vice series has proven to be a classic, with its innovative approach to the police procedural genre favoring a revival nearly 35 years later. The captivating narrative drew the attention of Michael Mann, leading him to direct a feature film version in 2006 featuring Colin Farrell and Jamie Foxx, although this adaptation faced criticism from both audiences and reviewers. Presently, Universal Pictures is preparing a fresh iteration of Miami Vice with a new director and writer involved.
According to a report from Deadline, director Joseph Kosinski will lead the upcoming Miami Vice film, with Dan Gilroy contributing as the screenwriter. Producer Dylan Clark will collaborate with Kosinski on the project, presenting a talented ensemble. Kosinski is widely recognized for directing the successful 2021 film Top Gun: Maverick, and he has worked alongside actor Tom Cruise on several other projects, including Oblivion.
Dan Gilroy is prominent for his 2014 directorial debut, Nightcrawler, which he also penned, featuring Jake Gyllenhaal. In addition, his most recent work includes directing and writing the 2019 film Velvet Buzzsaw, alongside producing the anticipated yet delayed film Magazine Dreams, starring Jonathan Majors. With time passing since the last cinematic portrayal of Miami Vice, Kosinski faces an exciting opportunity to revitalize the franchise and potentially create a new pop culture sensation, akin to his success with Maverick.
Joseph Kosinski Already Has a Highly Anticipated Summer 2025 Film
Recently re-emerging as a prominent figure in filmmaking, Joseph Kosinski’s contributions, highlighted by Top Gun: Maverick, have renewed interest in his directorial style. Beyond Oblivion, his notable work includes the ambitious 2010 project Tron: Legacy, which exceeded expectations by grossing over $400 million worldwide against a $170 million budget. This film arguably foreshadowed Kosinski’s later triumphs, including his use of IMAX technology— a technique he may utilize in the forthcoming Miami Vice film.
However, production of Miami Vice may not begin immediately, as Kosinski is engaged with a secret UFO project for Apple TV+, produced by Jerry Bruckheimer. Still, fans can anticipate his next release, F1, set to premiere this summer on June 27. Featuring Brad Pitt, the film will revolve around the exhilarating world of Formula One racing and promises to incorporate impressive practical effects.
The classic title *Miami Vice* lends itself well to contemporary action film interpretations, given its compelling blend of high-stakes crime drama. Though Michael Mann’s absence from this new endeavor raises questions, his commitment to the follow-up of his 1995 classic, Heat 2, explains his lack of involvement. Fans hope that Kosinski and Gilroy will craft a narrative that merges dynamic storytelling with action-packed sequences, reestablishing *Miami Vice* as a prominent title in modern cinema.
