Stage and screen luminary Norm Lewis is set to reveal the nominations for the 69th Annual Drama Desk Awards on April 30 at 12:50 PM, an announcement that will air on Spectrum News NY1. He will be joined by On Stage host Frank DiLella and Spectrum News NY1 anchor Rocco Vertuccio.

The Drama Desk Awards stand out as the sole major theater accolades in New York City that recognize productions spanning Broadway, Off Broadway, and Off-Off Broadway, placing them in the same competitive categories. This year’s ceremony is scheduled for June 1 at the NYU Skirball Center, with actor Debra Messing and Tituss Burgess taking on the hosting duties.

The executive producers for this year’s Drama Desk Awards are Staci Levine and Jessica R. Jenen. Notably, this year’s event will direct all net proceeds to benefit the Entertainment Community Fund, marking a significant milestone. Co-Presidents Charles Wright and David Barbour lead the organization.

Continuing the trend of inclusivity, all performance categories will be gender-neutral. The revised categories include Outstanding Leading Performance in a Play, Outstanding Leading Performance in a Musical, Outstanding Featured Performance in a Play, and Outstanding Featured Performance in a Musical.

Each category will feature twice as many nominees as previous years’ gendered categories, and voters will have the opportunity to cast two votes per category. This format allows for two winners to be selected; in the event of a tie, it’s possible to have more than two winners in a single category. Specific details regarding the awards presentation will be released soon.

A defining characteristic of the Drama Desk Awards is that the winners are determined by a panel of theater critics, journalists, editors, and publishers who are deeply engaged with the theater community. The awards celebrate the full spectrum of New York’s professional theater scene.
