Essential Guidelines for an Epic Road Trip

“Some of the most vibrant expressions of local cuisine and distinctive culinary traditions can often be found at gas stations,” states Frank Beard, a traveling sales representative and a strong advocate for the convenience store sector. Beard notably dedicated an entire month to eating exclusively at gas stations. “Having a structure and a fuel pump doesn’t limit creativity; these places can offer unique experiences.”

Among his top recommendations are Papu’s Café in Kansas City, known for its exceptional chicken shawarma sandwich; Pig Trail Café in Arkansas, which serves one of the finest burgers in the South; and Chef Point Café in Dallas, recognized for its appearance on Diners, Drive-Ins, and Dives.

Ensure Your Vehicle is Prepared

Like staying hydrated and getting enough sleep, maintaining your car is essential, yet often overlooked. According to road trip experts, proper vehicle upkeep is critical in averting roadside issues.

McKeel Hagerty, CEO of Hagerty, an organization for automotive enthusiasts that facilitates road trips for its members, highlights the necessity of checking fluid levels and ensuring routine oil changes. “I typically replace my car battery before embarking on long journeys,” he notes.

Alder supports this advice, adding, “Inspect your tires before a long drive; you want to know in advance if they’re worn down.” He cautions against being stranded miles from home due to neglecting tire, coolant, or oil levels. Electric vehicles, while lacking traditional fluids, still require windshield wiper fluid to clear away debris and insects.

Pack Sufficient Snacks and Hydration

The availability of snacks is crucial for a pleasant journey, says Newman. “You don’t want to face hunger during a trip. It’s vital for the comfort of any group traveling together, especially if unexpected weather changes arise.”

Newman emphasizes that hydration is paramount, suggesting that travelers carry plenty of water. Utilizing reusable water bottles can contribute to sustainability. For those traversing higher altitudes, she advises packing extra water due to the dehydrating effects of altitude sickness. “When traveling through locations like Colorado, where elevation changes frequently occur, it’s essential to stay hydrated,” she explains.

Prepare an Emergency Kit for Your Vehicle

Your car plays a significant role in your road trip, similar to the passengers. Beyond personal belongings, it’s wise to have an emergency bag for the vehicle itself. “In addition to your personal supplies, include essentials for the car,” advises Hagerty. “Items like rags, windshield cleaners, and a jack are invaluable. While not everyone needs extensive tools, I suggest bringing a multi-tool and a flashlight as well.”
