Fans of the long-running franchise NCIS will soon be treated to a deeper understanding of Leroy Jethro Gibbs, a beloved character portrayed by Mark Harmon for nearly two decades. The latest addition to the series, NCIS: Origins, is set to premiere on Monday, October 14, offering viewers an opportunity to journey back to Gibbs’s formative years. Austin Stowell steps into the role, with Harmon providing narration to guide the audience through this insightful exploration.

The premiere episode, titled “Enter Sandman,” is set in 1991, during a time when NCIS was still known as NIS. The storyline follows Gibbs as he returns from Desert Storm, grappling with the profound loss of his wife and daughter. As he embarks on his new career as a special agent at the Camp Pendleton NCIS office, he must navigate the challenges of a challenging environment alongside a team led by the legendary Mike Franks, portrayed by Kyle Schmid. The cast also features Mariel Molino as Special Agent Lala Dominguez, Tyla Abercrumbie as Field Operation Support Officer Mary Jo Sullivan, and Diany Rodriguez as Special Agent Vera Strickland, all contributing to this gritty portrayal of Gibbs’s early days.

Reflecting on taking over such a pivotal character, Stowell expressed his admiration for Harmon’s extensive work in the role, noting, “Mark Harmon has done a job that actors dream to do. He’s captured the world and so that is just slightly daunting. But getting to know Mark has really been paramount to me stepping into these shoes and trying to fill them.” This acknowledgment highlights the responsibility Stowell feels in representing a character that has become iconic in the realm of television.

Additionally, Sean Harmon, executive producer and son of Mark Harmon, shared insights into Gibbs’s character development. Having played a younger version of Gibbs in past flashbacks, he commented, “I believe that very few people are actually ‘born leaders’ and are instead forged into them, and Gibbs is no exception. Digging into the backstory of ‘the boss’ seemed like a good opportunity to find out why Gibbs turned out the way he did and who was around to influence him on that journey.” This perspective promises to add depth to Gibbs’s character throughout the series.
